With a takeout double, overcaller says: “Take us out of the opponents’ suit, anything else is okay!” When advancer choose a place to play, overcaller cannot change their mind and now say: “Not that!” because when we bid something different than what advancer has chosen, we are showing a hand too strong to overcall.
