Jump Overcalls: (Part 1 of 7) Overcaller

When an overcall is a jump (higher than the cheapest level we can bid at), it shows a weak, distributional hand. ALL jump overcalls are weak. The fact that we are jumping tells partner we have a weak hand. The level that we jump to shows partner how many cards we have in the suit. The purpose of a preemptive bid is to make the auction difficult for the opponents. We don’t expect to make these contracts, but we do expect to lose less points when we bid them than if we did not.
